Heels are not fashion. They are attitudes & moments that want to come out to play.

More times than not our shoes are the star of the show. We love to use shoes to make a statement especially heels. It’s a shame when they do not live up to our expectations. They looked glamorous in the store and when we tried them on they were almost magical. Then real life happens. Our noble attempts at walking in heels looks more like a circus act. The illusion of glamour is lost and replaced with a painful, wobbling clumsiness.

Walking more than four feet in heels is an art. No one is born with the skill set to walk on a four inch spike extending from the heel. Behold, there is a way to walk in heels without looking clumsy and hurting yourself. With patience, practice, and a little advice you will be able to glide gracefully in heels.

Here’s what you need to know about walking gracefully in heels.

Try on heels prior to buying.

Beginners should start with sturdier heels. Choose a pair with straps that cross over the ankle & bridge of the foot to hold it in.

Find your comfort zone. Determine your preferred heel height.

Quality heels trump less expensive heels. Invest in a good pair that will serve you for years.

The height of the heel should depend on the impression you want to make.

Know your realistic limits. Occasion and venue knowledge are essential for heel selection.

Check for hazards like cobblestones, grass and grates.

Practice the walk. Stand and place your feet hip distance apart. Gently sway from side to side like a pendulum, til you find a new center of gravity.

Walk straight and tall.

Do not take big long steps. You will look like you are falling forward (and you just might).

Most importantly, take smaller steps they are easier to manage.

How to put a heel on:

Sit on the edge of your chair. Feet should be hip-width apart, flat on the floor. Knees belong over the feet.

Back should be straight. Shoulders back. Head held high.

Lift right foot. Point toes like a Prima ballerina. Arch foot and slide into heel.

Toes should feel pushed forward, slightly clenched.

Lean back, tighten stomach muscles and slowly lift to stand.

*TIP – Practice your glide. Supermarket aisles are the perfect place to practice your glide. For accelerated learning, some choose to practice in heels on treadmills.

*Fun Fact – Marie Antoinette had a servant whose only job was to take care of her shoes. All 500 Pairs!

Walking in heels is like riding a bike. Once you know how, you’ll never forget.
