  1. Do your homework. Research the company ahead of time and learn as much as you can regarding their business and mission statement.

  2. Clean up your social media accounts. Employers today frequently Google candidates to gain more insight. Your social media presence should enhance your professional presence.

  3. Dress appropriately for the position. Dress for the position you want not the one you presently hold.

  4. Remember the 15 minute rule. Arrive early but no more than 15 minutes early. Stand in the reception area and wait for the interviewer to arrive. Keep your right hand free and offer a firm handshake. Always shake hands before and after the interview.

  5. Always permit the interviewer to be seated first. If you have the option, take the seat angular to the interviewer to eliminate the desk “barrier”

  6.  Communicate with excellent body language. Your non-verbal body language should communicate energy and confidence. Make good eye contact, smile, and be sure your hands rest on the desk or table, not your lap. This looks much more professional.

  7. Ask for the job. Say, “Are you able to provide me with the time frame and criteria for this position?”

  8. Always send a personal thank you note. It is acceptable to send a quick email note of thanks first. Follow up with a personal handwritten note within 24 hours after the interview.
